Adirondack Unitarian Universalist Community

Our History

AUUC began in 2001 as a grassroots effort by a small group of locals searching for a liberal religious community for themselves and their children. We held services at a hotel, in a small theater, at a local ski lodge, and even at a few rustic lakeside resorts before finally finding a permanent space to rent in a community art space in Saranac Lake. In 2002, fifty people signed our membership book at the Charter Sunday service. In 2004, we affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association. Our congregation continues to grow as the good news of our liberal faith spreads in our community.

Worship Hours and Location

Services are held at 89 Church Street (in the library of Historic Saranac Laboratory building) in Saranac Lake, at 10 a.m. on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. Sunday School and childcare are provided. Call (518) 891-AUUC for more information.

Our Ministers

Our part-time ministers are the Reverends Anne Marsh and Wade Wheelock, a married couple who are the full time ministers of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton, NY. Our congregation has built a strong and loving bond with this dynamic pair of spiritual leaders. In addition to leading at least one worship service a month, Anne and Wade lead workshops, provide pastoral care to our congregants, and perform special ceremonies such as weddings, child dedications, and memorial services. When they are not here, our services are either lay-led or are led by visiting ministers or guest speakers.

Worship Services

On a typical Sunday, we begin with a musical prelude, some opening words, and the lighting of our chalice. We usually sing an opening hymn. The children then hear a story before departing for their Sunday School classes. Other parts of a typical service include the sharing of joys and sorrows, guided meditation, the offertory, the sermon, and a closing hymn. After the service, we gather for coffee hour. At certain times of the year we hold special worship services with different formats, such as the Water Communion in September, the Christmas/Solstice service in December, and the Flower Communion in July.
